Meet Our Interim Director, Alumna Sarah Levine

Earlier this month, we let you know that 23 Emerge Vermont alumnae and our Executive Director, Ruth Hardy, are running for office during the 2018 state election cycle. These women join the more than 725 Emerge alumnae running for office nationwide!

Ruth will be temporarily stepping back from most of her duties at Emerge so she can focus on her state senate campaign in Addison County. Thus, we are excited to welcome alumna Sarah Levine to the the Emerge Vermont Team to serve as Interim Director/Program Coordinator until mid-November.

Sarah was part of the Emerge Vermont Class of 2018 which graduated at our Annual Event in March. She is a member of the Windham County Democratic Caucus and the Vermont State Democratic Party Executive Committee. Her interest in Vermont politics began when she served as a Legislative Page at the Statehouse in 8th grade. In high school, Sarah worked on several campaigns before attending Earlham College in Indiana, where she was active in student government. After college, she spent a year in Washington, DC working for a volunteer corps that focused on criminal justice reform. Sarah returned to Vermont last summer to work as a regional Program Coordinator for Girls on the Run, and more fully immerse herself in Vermont politics. She lives in Putney, where she enjoys swimming, running, writing, and activism.

The Emerge Vermont Board of Directors is looking forward to working with Sarah during this exciting time when a record number of Emerge alumnae are running in Vermont and across the country. As an alumna, Sarah knows the Emerge program first-hand, and especially how well it prepares women to run for office. Sarah will work with the board to plan a 5th Anniversary Celebration in September and a Fall Bootcamp Training for women running for local office in 2019. Ruth will stay on as an Advisor to support Sarah and ensure smooth leadership throughout the year.

On behalf of the Board, I am thrilled to see Ruth "walk the talk" by announcing her own candidacy to run for Vermont Senate. Emerge Vermont identifies, encourages, and trains Democratic women to run for office at all levels of government. Ruth is an example of an individual who gives to her community and inspires others. She exemplifies what Emerge Vermont stands for. While Emerge Vermont does not endorse individual candidates, we enthusiastically support Ruth's decision to run for office.

Welcome Sarah and best of luck Ruth! We could not be more thrilled that women in the Emerge Vermont network are stepping up to make a difference for their communities and our state!
